The West is aware of the transfer of German territory to Poland, but is comfortably unfamiliar with the forced human dislocations that accompanied it. This relocation is a veritable major resource for social science analysis, as well as one of the more dramatic events of postwar history. The 4.5 million Poles who moved westward, thus taking the place of forcibly displaced Germans, were young and rural. The area into which they moved was urbanized and industrialized. The transformation of the Poles in their new surroundings and the impact of this transformation upon the new Poland are of the utmost importance in understanding modern Poland.
The analysis of this problem required a scholar with a thorough knowledge of the relevant languages, access to the materials, a back- ground in economics and sociology as well as politics, the patience to bring order to a mass of disparate materials and statistics, and the analytical capacity to carry out a serious interdisciplinary study. If Professor Kruszewski does not employ many of the abstruse cate- gories of political or economic development, his book is a serious contribution to its understanding. It perhaps would not be going too far to suggest th at careful studies of this kind are more valuable than a number of the methodological treatises with which we have been inundated lately.
